Match production

A match factory can be built up in many different ways. As an example, a complete match factory working in two shifts with an annual capacity of 700 million boxes employs about 300-400 people. The major parts in such a factory are one splint line and four match production lines, a mini-plant with only one match production line would give about 175 million boxes in two shifts.

Splint production

The splint production line makes ready splints from logs and has a capacity of 5 or 10 million splints/hour. The line can be fully automatic or semi-automatic.

From the timber yard the logs are transferred to a cross cut saw (1) and a debarking machine (2) to the splint peeling machine (3), where the billet is peeled into veneer of the same thickness as the decided splints. The veneer is automatically transferred via a cutting and piling device to the chopping machine (4), which cuts the veneer into splints.

From the chopping machine the splints are transported to an impregnating machine (5) in order to prevent afterglowing of matches. A conveyor takes the splints to the drying machine (6) and from there to a polishing drum (7) and futher through sorting and sieving machines (8), which sort out incorrect splints. The splints are now ready for the final process.

Outer box skillet production

There are different methods of producing ready outer box skillets (printed, frictioned, creased and cut to size). For small and medium sized factories, the following is suitable.

The printing is done with a sheet offset printing machine with 2 or 4 colours. The printed sheets are cut to strips by a cutting machine. The stripes are fed into a creasing and frictioning machine and, after that, cut to ready skillets by a slitting machine.

One or several of these processes can, if desired, be made by an external company. Ready skillets can be purchased from our company.

Match production

The box making, match dipping and packaging can be made altogether in an automatic line or in semi-automatic units. The capacity in a fully automatic line is 43,000 boxes/hour, which equals 2,4 million matches/hour. Special high-speed lines can produce up to 70,000 boxes/hour with a content of maximum 36 matches/box.

In an automatic line, manufacturing of order- and inner boxes are made by high-speed machines (9, 10) and fed to the filling machine by conveyors.

In the continuous match dipping machine (11), the splints are placed in holes in the bars, which are assembled to and endless chain. In this machine, the splints are paraffined, dipped in a bath to get their heads and at last dried. At the end the matches are automatically pushed out from the bars and filled int the inner box in the filling machine (12). After closing, the boxes are conveyed furhter to a wrapping machine (13) and other packing machines (14).

One or several of these processes can, if desired, be made by an external company. Ready skillets can be purchased from our company.

Head and friction composition making

In addition to the described production systems, a match factory must also comprise mixing equipment for the match head composition and the outer box side friction composition (if ready skillets are purchased, friction mixing equipment is not needed).

Workshop

A small workshop is needed, comprisiong grinding machines for knifes and lancets (for splint machines) and tools for cardboard cutting and punching.
